Etymology[edit]
From Old Irish eórna (compare Irish eorna, Manx oarn), from *yewornio-, from Proto-Celtic *yeu- (compare Breton yell (“spelt”)), from Proto-Indo-European *yéwos (“barley”) (compare Lithuanian javaĩ (“grain”), Persian جو (jaw), Sanskrit यव (yava)).
