Swedish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

(go) +‎ nöd (need, distress) +‎ (on)

Verb[edit]

nöd (present går nöd på, preterite gick nöd på, supine gått nöd på, imperative gå nöd på)

  1. (uncommon) to be in need
Det går nöd på de fattiga i landet
The poor people in the country are in need
  2. (idiomatic, when negated, usually as "det går ingen nöd på") to be doing pretty alright (despite (somewhat) trying circumstances, all things considered)
VD:n tjänade tjugo miljoner mindre förra året, men han drog ändå in hundra miljoner, så det går nog ingen nöd på honom
The CEO made twenty million less last year, but he still pulled in a hundred million, so he probably isn't starving
