From Proto-Turkic *kül-.

Cognate with Turkish gülmek, Old Turkic [script needed] (küli-), Kazakh күлу (külu), Tatar көлү (kölü) Uzbek kulmoq, Uyghur كۈلمەك (külmek), Yakut күл (kül), Chuvash кул (kul), (< Chuvash кол (kol)) etc.[1]
