From Proto-West Germanic *gasakan, from Proto-Germanic *gasakaną, equivalent to ġe- +‎ sacan. Cognate with Old High German gisachan, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐍃𐌰𐌺𐌰𐌽 (gasakan).
