Inherited from Proto-Germanic *haftijaną. Cognate with Old Norse hepta, Old High German heften, Old Saxon heftian, Old Frisian hefta, Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐍆𐍄𐌾𐌰𐌽 (haftjan). Ultimately derived from Proto-Indo-European *keh₂p-; compare Old English hæft.
