hut tax (plural hut taxes)

  1. (Africa, historical) A tax imposed by colonial authorities on dwellings or households.
    • 1901 June 7, “District Reports”, in The Agricultural Journal and Mining Record[1], volume 4, number 7, page 196:
      The Natives have paid up their hut-tax, amounting to about £65, and appear to have plenty of money.
