Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Proto-Turkic *yï̄lan, a derivation of Proto-Turkic *yï̄l- (“to creep”). Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (yïlan, “snake”), Turkish yılan, Tatar елан (yelan).

From Proto-Tungusic *ilan. Cognate with Manchu ᡳᠯᠠᠨ (ilan), Nanai илан (ilan)(ilan), Ulch и̇ла (ịla), Even и̇ла̇н (i̇lȧn), Evenki илан (ilan), Oroqen ɪlan, Negidal илан, Solon ilang etc.

From an irregular elision of /p/ and an addition of /n/ from Proto-Philippine *pijah (“how many”), from Proto-Austronesian *pijax (“how many”). Compare Pangasinan piga, Kapampangan pilan, Masbatenyo pira, Cebuano pila, Javanese ꦥꦶꦫ (pira), Hawaiian -hia, Paiwan pida, and Thao piza.
