From ja̠p⁵⁵ + maʔ³¹. The second element is from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *(s/r)-ma(ŋ/k) (dream), therefore cognate with Burmese မက် (mak), Old Tibetan རྨང་ལམ (rmang lam, dream), Old Chinese (*mɯŋ, dream). Compare Burmese အိပ်မက် (ipmak, dream), Jingpho yup mang (dream), Taraon jɑ⁵⁵ mo⁵³ (dream) and Nuosu ꀀꂼ (it muop, dream). Compare with Lhao Vo yhab mo, , Zaiwa yvupmoq, and Longchuan Achang it⁵⁵ mɔʔ⁵⁵.
