From Proto-Aslian *ɟarlaaʔ (thorn), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɟlaʔ (thorn). Cognate with Bahnar jơla, Bru sərlèa, Chong [Term?] sralaːˀ, Old Mon jirla whence Mon ဓလ (həlɛ̀ˀ).
