Etymology[edit]
Attested at least since 1791. A Balkan wanderword of unknown origin, perhaps from Ottoman Turkish قوقوروز (kukuruz) or Serbo-Croatian kukuruz. The penultimate vowel in modern form is likely due to paronymic attraction to common suffix -yca, cf. Czech kukuřice.
