Etymology

[edit]

Unclear origin. Most straightforwardly, l' + alga (seaweed) +‎ -er (adjective-forming suffix). Relatedly, a Medieval Latin Aleguerium (literally stagnation of seaweed) has also been proposed. In either case, ultimately from Latin alga.
