Usage notes[edit]
- Along with the prefix pang-, this prefix is affected by initial consonant mutations.
- The prefix becomes mam- before ⟨b⟩ or ⟨p⟩. Where the root begins with ⟨p⟩, the consonants in question may be deleted.
- the prefix becomes man- before ⟨d⟩, ⟨l⟩, ⟨s⟩, ⟨t⟩. Where the root begins with ⟨s⟩ or ⟨t⟩, the consonants in question may be deleted (e.g. manusok, root tusok)).
- Where the initial of the root is a /k/, the sound is dropped (e.g. manguha, root kuha)).
- Where the initial of the root is a vowel, the resulting affixed form is written without a hyphen (e.g. manganak, root anak)), however this is typically not observed in more recent affixed forms where a hyphen is added (e.g. *mang-inis for manginis, root inis)).
