Unknown, probably from Sanskrit मृच् (mṛc), which is compound form of मृद् (mṛd, earth, soil), from Proto-Indo-Iranian [Term?], from Proto-Indo-European *ml̥dʰo-. For example, Sanskrit मृच्चय (mṛccaya, a heap of earth). (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.)
