From Hakka 味精 (mi-chîn), from a genericized trademark of Tien Chu Ve-Tsin food company. The "味精" trademark itself ultimately comes from Japanese ()(せい) (misei). Cognate of Vietnamese mì chính. Doublet of mecin.
