obda

  1. work

Maltese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Sicilian obbidiri, ubbidiri and/or Italian obbedire, ubbidire, both from Latin oboedire. The Maltese imperfect tense looks like a native form, whence the Semitic (alternative) past participle. The regularisation of the past tense into *beda was hindered by the unrelated beda (to begin).

Pronunciation

Verb

[edit]

obda (imperfect jobdi, past participle obdut or mobdi)

  1. to obey
