From earlier pangibugho, theorized to be pa- +‎ ngibugho, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *buʀəhuʔ (jealous). Alternate theoretical roots include tibugho and bugho. Compare Cebuano abubho, Waray-Waray abugho, Tausug abughu', and Malay cemburu. Doublet of pangimbulo.
