passive attack (plural passive attacks)

  1. (cryptography) An attack in which the cryptanalyst cannot interact with any of the parties involved, attempting to break the system solely based upon observed data such as ciphertext.
  2. (gaming) A damaging effect that is caused by an object or character when another character interacts with it.
