From roeg (bird) + a morpheme from Proto-Tai *kaːᴬ (crow). The second part is cognate with Thai กา (gaa), Lao ກາ (), ᦂᦱ (k̇aa), Shan ၵႃ (kǎa), Tai Nüa ᥐᥣ (kaa), Tày ca.
