From Proto-Aslian *ruəy (fly), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ruj ~ *ruuj ~ *ruəj ~ *ruhaj (fly). Cognate with Khmer រុយ (ruy), Vietnamese ruồi, Pacoh riroi, Car Nicobarese ṛūöi, Bahnar roi, Eastern Lawa โร-อี.
