Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Vietic *k-rəŋ (horn), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *d₂raŋ (horn). Cognate with Central Vietnamese trừng, Muong Bi khầng, Mon ဂြၚ် (krɛ̀aŋ, horn, tusk), Khmu [Cuang] cndrɨŋ, Khasi reng, Kharia ɖeɽeŋ, Santali ᱫᱤᱨᱤᱧ (diriñ).

Compare also Garo grong, which, according to Blench (2013), presents an Austroasiatic substratum, while Sagart (2008) considered it to be a cognate of Chinese (OC *C.[k]ˤrok) (B-S).
