From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *sinaʀ (“ray of light”) (compare Fijian siga (“sun”), Malay sinar, Nias sino, Samoan masina (“moon”), and Tausug sinag (“brightness”)), from Proto-Austronesian *siNaʀ (“sun”) (compare Amis cidal (“sun”) and Sakizaya cilal (“sun”)).
