training wall (plural training walls)

  1. A wall, bank or jetty built to confine and direct the flow of a river, watercourse or tide.
    • 1950 January, “Re-Opening of the Eyemouth Branch”, in Railway Magazine, page 11:
      A training wall of steel-sheet piling driven down 25 ft. now forms the other side of the mill lade.
