Inherited from Old Spanish tremendal, from Latin tremendus (“to be trembled at”) + -ālis, from tremō (“to tremble, to quake”). Later form influenced by e.g. robledal (“oak grove”), from Latin rōborētum (“oak grove”) + -ālis.
