Etymology[edit]
First attested as Sempke in 1841. Potentially derived from dialectal sompke (“small trench-shaped pool in a marsh”) or semp (“charlock mustard, (Rhamphospermum arvense, syns. Sinapis arvensis, etc.)”). Originally the name of a duck decoy.
