Etymology 1[edit]

Substantivized neuter of adjective αλιευτικός (alieftikós)[1] by ellipsis of neuter noun σκάφος (skáfos, vessel). As in Ancient Greek expression ἁλιευτικόν (halieutikón) πλοῖον (ploîon) "fishing vessel",[2] from ἁλιευτικός (halieutikós, of or pertaining to fishing), derived from ἁλιεύω (halieúō, I fish), derived from ἁλιεύς (halieús, fisherman), derived from ἅλς (háls, salt; sea).
