Ancient Greek

Etymology

[edit]

Furnée argues for a Pre-Greek origin, but the word might also be of onomatopoeic origin. Compare Proto-Indo-European *kʷeh₂s-, itself of imitative origin; βήξ (bḗx) could point to a protoform *gʷeh₂(s)-gʰ-.
