Inherited from Byzantine Greek μάστορας and Byzantine Greek μαΐστωρ (maḯstōr), from Hellenistic μαγίστωρ, μάγιστρος (official of 3rd century), from Latin magister.[1][2] Also see μήστωρ (mḗstōr, adviser, counsellor).
