From Proto-Hellenic *spéřřō, from Proto-Indo-European *spéryeti, from *sper- (to sprinkle, scatter).

Cognate with English spray, sprout, spread, spare. Perhaps related through extensions of this root to Latin spargō, spernō, spurcus and spurius, English spurn.
