Bashkir[edit]

Бәрәс

Etymology[edit]

Compare Tatar бәрән (bärän, lamb).

Appears to be of a substrate/onomatopoeic origin, compare Bashkir бәр-бәр (bər-bər, a call for sheep).

Possibly from (para-)Iranic substratum, compare Persian بره (barre, lamb), Middle Persian [script needed] (bārān, sheep, lamb), from Proto-Indo-European *urh₁en- (lamb).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): [bæˈræs]
  • Hyphenation: бә‧рәс

Noun[edit]

Муса ғәләйһи-ссәләмдең көтөүендә 15 меңләгән һарыҡ булған. Кис һанаһа, бер бәрәс тулмай икән.
Musa ğələyhi-ssələmdeñ kötöwendə 15 meñləgən harıq bulğan. Kis hanaha, ber bərəs tulmay ikən.
There were some 15 thousand sheep in Musa's herd (peace be upon him). When he counted (the sheep once) in the evening, he found out that one lamb was missing.
