Ultimately from Ancient Greek ἐπί (epí, on top of) and φαινόμενον (phainómenon). By surface analysis, епі- (epi-) +‎ фено́мен (fenómen). Compare Russian эпифено́мен (epifenómen), Belarusian эпіфено́мен (epifjenómjen).
