Inherited from Proto-Slavic *kanjukъ / *kanjakъ, from *kaňa, from Proto-Indo-European *kōnyā or *kan- (to sing), whence also Proto-Germanic *hanô (rooster, cock), Proto-Germanic *hanjō (hen) (whence English hen), Latin cicōnia (stork), Latin canō (to sing), Welsh canu, Ancient Greek καναχέω (kanakhéō).
