Etymology

Old Church Slavonic посадити (posaditi) + -ник (-nik). Can be analysed as по- (po-) +‎ сади́ть (sadítʹ) +‎ -ник (-nik). Named because originally, the posadniks were appointed by the Prince of Kievan Rus as his governors, but were later elected by veche councils.
