Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Mordvinic *salams, inherited from Proto-Uralic *sala (conceal, keep (sg) secret, steal; thief). Compare Finnish sala (secret), salata (to conceal, keep secret, cover up, hide), Võro sala (spy, thief), Northern Sami suola, Eastern Mari шолы (šoly, thief).
