From Proto-Turkic *sat-ïg-čï (seller), from Proto-Turkic *sat- (to sell).

Cognate with Bashkir һатыусы (hatıwsı, seller), Southern Altai садучы (sadučï, seller), Turkish satıcı (seller), Dolgan атыыһыт (merchant), Chuvash сутуҫӑ (sut̬uś̬ă, salesman), etc.

Synchronously, сату (satu, to sell) +‎ -шы (-şy, affix forming an agent noun).
