Etymology

From *türküm "group; type, sort" – apparently a Central Asian innovation, most probably from Proto-Turkic *tür (type, sort).

Cognate with Tatar төркем (törkem), Kyrgyz түркүм (türküm), Uzbek turkum (group), Uyghur تۇركۇم (turkum, group), Turkish türkü (folk song).
