Serbo-Croatian[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Proto-Slavic *ętro, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁entrom. The noun was originally of neuter gender in Proto-Slavic and Proto-Indo-European, but since it was chiefly used in plural (with the ending -a for neuters) it became remodeled as a feminine singular noun.
Cognate with Russian я́тро (játro, “testicle, liver”).
