From Middle Mongol *qomaqai (greedy, hungry), see Mongolian хомхой (xomxoj, greedy).

Cognate with Kazakh қомағай (qomağai, greedy); perhaps also related to South Altay коомой (koomoy, bad), Khakas хомай (xomay, bad).
