Etymology[edit]

The origin is unknown. Has been compared to the Ancient Greek theonym Ἄρης (Árēs) and Avestan 𐬀𐬭𐬀 (ara, Ara, the name of a certain believer, father of Berezishnu and Kasupatu). Probably identical with Ancient Greek Ἤρ (Ḗr) son of Ἀρμένιος (Arménios); see the Myth of Er.
