Etymology

[edit]

From Ancient Greek πᾶνις (pânis), from Latin pānis (bread). Could be a direct Latin borrowing, because the word is still alive in dialects and is not a learned transliteration of Greek. Besides, the Greek word is rare and is not found in the translation of the Bible.
