Yiddish
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]Adjective
[edit]אוקראַיִנישער • (ukrainisher)
- inflection of אוקראַיִניש (ukrainish):
Etymology 2
[edit]Clipping of אוקראַיִנישער ייִד (ukrainisher yid), with the feminine אוקראַיִנישע (ukrainishe) formed by back-formation.
Noun
[edit]אוקראַיִנישער • (ukrainisher) m, plural אוקראַיִנישע (ukrainishe), feminine אוקראַיִנישע (ukrainishe)
Usage notes
[edit]- Yiddish rigorously distinguishes between Jews and non-Jews in national terminology. A Ukrainian non-Jew is not an ukrainisher, but rather an אוקראַיִנער (ukrainer).
- This noun declines in much the same way as the adjective אוקראַיִניש (ukrainish), but without the separate predicate form. For example, the dative and accusative singular are אוקראַיִנישן (ukrainishn).
