Ultimately from Old Italian banca (counter, moneychanger's bench or table), from Lombardic bank (bench, counter), from Proto-Germanic *bankiz (bench, counter). Cognate with Old High German banc, banch (counter, bench), Old English benċ (bench). More at bench.
