Etymology

The "friendship" sense is a backformation from עמית, itself related to Aramaic עֲמִיתָא (friend) and Akkadian emūtu (family, company), and the root ע־מ־ה.[1] (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.)
