Etymology[edit]
Of the root ء ي س (ʔ-y-s), from يَئِسَ (yaʔisa) by metathesis.
Verb[edit]
أَيِسَ • (ʔayisa) I, non-past يَأْيَسُ (yaʔyasu)
- to give up hope, to despair
- to become barren, to despair of the recurrence of the menstrual flux
- to become soft, to become pliant
