Etymology[edit]
Compound of Classical Persian یوم (yawm) + تعطیل (ta'tīl), the first element from Arabic يَوْم (yawm, “day”), the second from Arabic verbal noun تَعْطِيل (taʕṭīl, “suspension, break, hindrance”), from verb عَطَّلَ (ʕaṭṭala, “to suspend, to inactivate”).
