Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Prakrit 𑀢𑀻𑀲𑀁 (tīsaṃ), from Sanskrit त्रिंशत् (triṃśat). The preservation of /r/ is probably due to Sanskritic influence; compare other New Indo-Aryan forms such as Bengali ত্রিশ (triś).
