Borrowed from Classical Persian آفتاب (āftāb), from Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾptʾb /⁠āftāb⁠/, sunshine). Compare Bengali আফতাব (aphtab), Gujarati આફતાબ (āphatāb), Punjabi ਆਫ਼ਤਾਬ (āfatāb).
