From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hₐzdʰí, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ₔsdʰí (2nd person singular imperative of *h₁es- (to be)). Cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬛𐬍 (zdī, be!, 2nd person singular imperative of 𐬀𐬵- (ah-, to be)), Ancient Greek ἴσθι (ísthi, 2nd person singular imperative of εἰμῐ́ (eimí, to be)).
