Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Classical Persian خواه مخواه (xʷāh ma-xʷāh, literally “willing (or) not willing, willy-nilly”). Compare Urdu خواہ مَخواہ (xāh maxāh).

- unnecessarily, unwillingly
- without any good reason
- used for an action which did not give the expected benefit
