Borrowed from Classical Persian تماشا (tamāšā), ultimately from Arabic مَشَى (mašā, to walk). Compare Bengali তামাশা (tamaśa), Bhojpuri तमासा (tamāsā), Malayalam തമാശ (tamāśa).
