From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hnaś-, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hnać-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂neḱ- (to reach, attain). Cognate with Latin nanciscor (I encounter), Old Irish (do·)icc (comes), Ancient Greek ἤνεγκα (ḗnenka, I carried)) (aorist of φέρω (phérō)), Old English ġenōg (whence English enough).
